Wood Pellet Stoves Explained

What is a Wood Pellet Stove?
A pellet stove is a heating device very similar to a normal woodburning stove however the difference between the two is that the wood pellet stove burns Wood Pellets. Wood Pellet stoves are extremely efficient and have been known to be upto 90% efficient. Pellet stoves give you the controllability of a gas stove with the environmental benefits of a woodburner.
What are Wood Pellets?
Wood pellets are classed as a Biomass fuel. Biomass fuel is a term used for "waste or "Left over" materials from other products. for example a furniture factory could sell their off cuts to Wood pellet manufactures so they can be ground down and turned into wood pellets and therefore there is no waste.
Wood Pellets are made by compressing sawdust or wood chippings at an extremely high compression rate to bind the material together tightly to form a pellet. By compressing at these high rates it also forces out any excess moisture which means the wood pellets can have an extremely low moisture content which will improve the quality of the burn.
How do Wood pellet stoves work?
Pellets are fed into the fire chamber as and when required to ensure the fuel is used efficiently. Some pellet stove have an external hopper which will feed the pellets into the stobve or some of the more modern stoves have an internal mini hopper built into the stove itself. You simply fill the hopper with pelllets, upto 3 days worth in some cases and the pellet stove will feed itself.
Are pellet stoves easy to use?
Many of the pellet stoves available today have the option of a programmable remote control option. These remotes allow you to control the heat output of the pellet stove using the up or down button on the remote control which will reduce or increase the burner and the rate of which the pellets are released.
On some models you can even programme what time you wish the pellet stove to switch on and off again. |
